Spot the Troll is an eye-opening little quiz game which tasks you with examining eight different real-life social media accounts and figuring out which ones of them are fake accounts created to manipulate the public.
In modern times social media is holding more and more sway over opinions and beliefs of the general public. However in recent years, a complex form of trolling has arisen that uses fake accounts to help spread discord in communities, spread misinformation and destabilize countries. Obviously Russia gets the blame for the majority of it, but they’re not the only culprits.
There’s no doubt that social media is rife with bots and fake accounts, but can you spot them? You may be thinking “yeah it’s easy”, but Spot the Troll highlights the fact that it’s really not. It presents you with eight different social media accounts across Twitter and Instagram and tasks you with figuring out if they are fake internet troll accounts. It’s not easy, but there are some tell-tale signs that the game teaches you as you play.
It only takes around 10 minutes to play through Spot the Troll but it will change the way you look at social media forever. It does a great job of teaching you some tell-tale signs of a fake account and it highlights the lengths the trolls go to to polarise and stoke the flames of divisive subjects. It’s good to remember that there are trolls on both sides of an argument too – just because they’re tweeting something you agree with doesn’t mean they’re not a troll.
