Star Fetchers: Pilot is a very funny, wonderfully weird and surprisingly brutal 2D action adventure that follows two young sword-wielding gangstas who are attempting to become the top-dogs of an inner-city gang system.
Pilot is part one of a planned Star Fetchers series of games, which follows two adorable wannabe gangster girls who want to rise through the ranks of a dark inner-city underworld. It’s really not a game that takes itself too seriously though and it’s packed full of bizarre characters and hilarious random gags – within the first few minutes you’ll be offered penis enlargement pills from a couple of enterprising Girl Scouts and chat to an obsolete Etsy robot which has learnt what it means to be human.
The combat in Star Fetchers: Pilot is just as chaotic and silly as the plot, and it’s a whole lot of fun. You move your character with the WASD keys as in a traditional 2D action platformer, but you use the mouse to swing your sword around your character, slicing your way through anyone who gets in the way. Enemies can deflect your attacks as in a normal sword fight, meanwhile you can use your sword to deflect bullets and you can slow down time for short periods too.
With its witty dialogue, oddball characters, bizarre twists and excellent sword swinging combat there isn’t a dull moment in Star Fetchers: Pilot’s entire play time. It feels like you’ve entered a child’s imaginary version of what a gangster adventure would be, but with plenty of adult humor and buckets of blood. Highly recommended.
