Streets of Rage Zombies is an incredible Streets of Rage fan game that pits Axel and friends against Zombie hordes, crooked cops, naughty nuns, Pennywise and even Samara from The Ring.
Created in OpenBOR, Streets of Rage Zombies allows you to take to the streets for some good old fashioned Streets of Rage side-scrolling beat ‘em up action. However things have got a whole lot freakier on the streets in this outing. There’s a whole host of freaky monsters and misfits to beat up and the game plays more like Streets of Rage 2X than the Genesis originals, with faster, more fluid combat and better visuals.
Streets of Rage Zombies features one main campaign mode and three shorter bonus ones that have different themes and (often) different sprite sets. You also have access to six playable characters – Axel, Mac, Adam and Blaze from the originals are joined by Shiva (a boss in SoR2 and secret playable character in SoR3) and ZOMblaze (a zombified version of Blaze).
It’s great fun fighting your way through the monster filled streets of Streets of Rage Zombies. Even though it’s based on a decades old game the gameplay feels fresh and the pixel art animation is superb. Punching zombies in the face never gets old. Highly recommended.
