The Average Everyday Adventures of Samantha Browne is a beautifully illustrated visual novel in which you play a young woman who has to overcome her severe social anxiety disorder to go into her dorm kitchen and make a cup of oatmeal.
Making a cup of oatmeal may not sound like too big a challenge, but to Samantha Browne it’s a highly stressful task as it means she has to venture out of her room and risk bumping into another person. She’s reeeeally not a people person, and only interacts with others when she absolutely has to, over-obsessing over every little action she does as she worries how others perceive her.
There are lots of ways to fail in the act of making a cup of oatmeal, but once you succeed it really does feel like a great achievement. Taking around 10 minutes to complete, The average Everyday Adventures of Samantha Browne features excellent artwork throughout and the writing really makes you care for the character. Instead of thinking ‘oh just get over it’, you’re drawn into Samantha’s mind-set, and find a lot of the things she fears, are fears and thoughts you may of had yourself at some point (although maybe not to such a severe extent). A well crafted and insightful game that really does make you feel for the protagonist.
