The Blackpine Outbreak is a short first person survival horror game that takes place in a highly detailed recreation small town near the Canadian border that’s been ravaged by a zombie apocalypse.
You start The Blackpine Outbreak with a message from a stranger coming over your radio. They need help – their partner has gone missing while searching for medication. You then venture out into the zombie-filled post apocalyptic town of Blackpine to see if you can aid them. Your journey takes around 30 minutes and you only have a revolver and whatever spare bullets you can scavenge to protect yourself from he zombie hordes.
The core narrative of The Blackpine Outbreak is pretty minimal, but thanks to the highly detailed Unreal Engine-powered world that you make your way through, there’s plenty of environmental storytelling to flesh it out. The zombie outbreak clearly happened a long time ago and people have done what they can to shore up their defenses and protect themselves from the zombie hordes. Your character has a particularly impressive base set up and you notice a few other signs of survivors on your journey (though you don’t actually see any survivors).
The Blackpine Outbreak’s survival shooter gameplay and narrative are fairly basic, but it more than makes up for that with its highly detailed post-apocalyptic environment. It feels like a real place where real people have done their best to survive against the zombie hordes. There now seem to be very few survivors left, which os probably why you set out to aid the mysterious stranger in the first place. Highly recommended.
