The Body Monstrous – Browser Game

The Body Monstrous is a thought provoking narrative driven horror adventure that explores themes of anxiety and depression as you live under the constant burden of an amorphous monster that lives in your basement.

Created by Ribrnes (creator of Candypink), The Body Monstrous is a short psychological horror game about a young person who is dealing with anxiety and depression. These negative thoughts have manifested themselves in the form of a grotesque monster that lives in your basement.

Rather than confronting the monster you feed it a little every day, which helps to keep it at bay, but it’s part of you and will never go away. Just stepping foot outside is an arduous task for you and the fact that you do freelance work online means you rarely have to go outside anyway. Your only real contact with the outside world is your old aged neighbor who asks you for assistance now and again with odd jobs she can’t manage herself. Though maybe she’s the one that’s helping you…

Taking around 20 minutes to play through, The Body Monstrous is a great piece of interactive storytelling that weaves a powerful narrative throughout its short playtime. It’s always hard for outsiders to comprehend what dealing with mental disorders feels like to the person affected by them. Manifesting these negative emotions as an actual monster is a great touch and the way your character tries to deal with it feels very realistic. Highly recommended.
