The Cremation of Sam McGee – Downloadable Game

The Cremation of Sam McGee

The Cremation of Sam McGee is a wonderfully atmospheric narrative experience based on the poem of the same name by Robert W. Service, with narration by the late, great Johnny Cash, that tells the tale of a prospector who must cremate his dead friend’s body.

The narration is taken from a 2006 reading of the poem by Johnny Cash. If you’ve never heard the poem or Johnny Cash’ rendition of it you’re in for a treat – his deep, powerful voice adds an air of authenticity to the darkly witty frontier poem and makes for a thoroughly captivating experience. This is compounded by the excellent visual design, inspired by the work of Ted Harrison, that really brings the harsh wintery landscape of the frontier to life.

This virtual rendition of The Cremation of Sam McGee really helps flesh out the harsh wintery world that the protagonist is trying to survive in, and the narration by Johnny Cash is exceptional. It may be easy to create something good from great source material, but the dev has actually managed to add to it, using modern day game design to breathe new life into a superb piece of poetry that’s over a hundred years old. Highly recommended.
