The Father: Reboot – Downloadable Game

The Father: Reboot is a very weird first person horror game based on a creepypasta about a cursed Majora’s Mask cartridge.

A remake of the dev’s original The Father game, the reboot similarly is a surreal horror game that draws inspiration from Ben Drowned – a freaky creepypasta about a cursed The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask cartridge. In the game you have heard rumors of the cursed cartridge and have managed to get a copy of the ROM online. After booting it up in an emulator you find that something is very wrong with the ROM, and your presence in it’s cursed digital world is very much unwanted.

There are a few things that don’t work so well, such as the static jump scare images, but on the whole it’s a great little horror game that takes a well known video game world and transforms it into something very unsettling. The grainy N64 visuals work really well and there are some fun little easter eggs to discover as you explore. The narrative is all very confusing (though it does make a little more sense if you read the Ben Drowned creepypasta) and you constantly have a feeling that you’re trespassing somewhere that you really shouldn’t be. Hyrule never looked so freaky.
