The Ferryman is a seafaring eldritch horror adventure where a ferryman delivers supplies to tormented lighthouse keepers stretching across a sea of monsters.
In The Ferryman you are a recently recruited ferryman whose job it is to sail out into the sea and deliver supplies to the keepers of a seemingly endless line of lighthouses. The lighthouses weren’t built to warn ships away, they have another purpose, which you learn about as you chat to each of the different keepers. The keepers are all in different states of sanity and health, brought around by a mysterious plague that infects the world, and has infected you…
The gameplay in The Ferryman is fairly simple, but challenging, with you attempting to keep your ship going and afloat as it travels between the lighthouses. There are various monsters that live in the sea, the most common of which are the Wall-Eaters that chew big holes in your ship that require repairing. Not all the monsters are bad, Sirens give you stat upgrades, but for the most part everything is out to kill you, including the weather!
The game does get a little frustrating when the Fog-Eater appears and the ending is a bit of an anticlimax, but on the whole The Ferryman is a great little game. The artwork is fantastic, it’s got tons of atmosphere and the sound design is superb. The various (fully voice-acted) Keepers that you meet are the real highlight and the lore is really interesting. Highly recommended.
