The Other Half is a beautiful and incredibly powerful narrative driven dark fantasy adventure that delves into the dark parts of humanity as you venture into a land that’s been infested with a dark demonic presence.
In The Other Half you take on the role of a demon hunter who has been summoned by a mysterious man called Daniel, to vanquish a demonic infestation from a once beautiful mountainside. Along the way you meet other important characters who play a part in Daniel’s life, including a woman called Annalise who Daniel is particularly fond of. As you make your way up the mountain you learn more of Daniel’s story and use fire to slay the grotesque abominations that have infested the land. However, this is far from your usual fantasy action adventure…
To say much more about the plot of The Other Half would lessen the impact, but needless to say it’s a game much more focused on the monstrous side of humanity than actual monsters. There’s a reason for everything in this game – whether it be the names and descriptions of your armor pieces, the herbs you collect or even the form that the demonic manifestations take. The game takes some very dark twists as you piece together what’s really going on, and it can get genuinely horrifying at times.
Taking around two hours to play through, the artwork is beautiful, the monsters designs are creative and the combat is engaging, but it’s the voice acting and the story that really gets you. It does a great job of making believable three dimensional characters and making you understand the mindset of a certain character (while still allowing you to be horrified by their actions and wondering if there’s any they can come back from them). It’s a very powerful and though provoking experience that will stick with you long after completion. Highly recommended.
Please Note: You can play the game for free, but it’s certainly worth paying for and all the profits from sale are being donated to the Restorative Justice Project.
