The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car is a powerful visual novel narrative in which two strangers discuss their past, their problems, their music taste and the zombie apocalypse that’s wiping out humanity.
The world is ending, everyone you know is dead and the only two people you know are alive at this moment in time are you and your companion in the car. At the start of the game you’re given a choice of which character you’d like to play, with the story playing out slightly differently each way and you getting to hear your character’s thoughts throughout.
Both characters in The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car have very different outlooks on life – he is more free spirited and open, while she is more pessimistic and untrusting. But they manage to offer some semblance of comfort to each other and even manage an occasional laugh as they drive along the long road through a dying world.
The writing is superb throughout The Shadows That Run Alongside Our Car, with each person being a believable and well rounded character. We won’t spoil any of the story here, but we highly recommend playing through twice to experience each character’s outlook on the world and to help piece together the ambiguous ending(s).
It’s an beautiful narrative that uses the backdrop of the zombie apocalypse to explore what makes people tick. Those shadows that are running alongside your car aren’t zombies – they’re memories. There may be no happy endings at the end of the world, but there are some powerful glimpses of humanity and a hope of finding some inner peace before the end comes.
