The Writer Is Anxious is a fabulous genre hopping adventure that’s packed full of clever twists as an anxious writer searches for inspiration in a book.
Spoiler Warning: Due to the nature of the game, it’s hard to talk about The Writer Is Anxious without ruining its many surprises, so we highly recommend playing the game before reading on (but will still try to keep it reasonably spoiler-free).
The Writer Is Anxious starts off like a fairly traditional visual novel/interactive fiction game, with you clicking on highlighted words to progress through the narrative as your writer attempts to finish a story before the end of the day. However, it soon becomes apparent that there’s far more to the game than that when your frustrated writer picks a book of the shelf and you’re transported into a fantasy world, with a dragon, a princess, a horde of zombies and a hungry cat.
As you progress the genre of the book you’re reading morphs through fantasy adventure to romance, horror and murder mystery. Not only does the genre of the book change, but the playstyle morphs too – incorporating QTE’s, combat, puzzles, health bars, point and click adventure mechanics and even a Phoenix Wright-style interrogation scene.
It’s a very cleverly crafted game that’s packed full of great twists, witty writing and inventive gameplay. You’re never sure what to expect next and with seven possible endings i also has plenty of replayability. You really won’t regret opening the book on this fabulous narrative adventure. Highly recommended.
