Vinyl is a wonderfully weird blend of Hotline Miami-esque top-down insta-death action, noir graphic novel visuals and rhythm action jazz fusion QTEs!
In Vinyl you are sitting in your home listening to a record when all of a sudden a gang of heavily armed mobsters break in and start shooting up the joint. In a normal top down shooter this would then mean some Hotline Miami-style run and gun carnage, but Vinyl has a very different style of play. The entire gunfight is one long rhythm action QTE, in which you jump between hiding places using the left shoulder button and shoot at the gangsters using the face buttons on the control pad.
It’s very strange game that takes some getting used to, especially as there can be very little time before seeing the button prompts and getting shot at (you can just mash buttons but you recieve score penalties for each wrong press). It’s an exhilarating experience, not least due to the stylish visuals and cacophony of trumpets in the crazy jazz fusion soundtrack. Jazzline Miami.
