Water Hazard is a fun homage/parody of classic PS1 era survival horror games that sees you playing a gun toting bandito who boards a fish/rat-monster infested ship looking for answers.
Water Hazard draws inspiration from classic survival horror games like Resident Evil, Alone in the Dark and Dino Crisis as it spins out is odd little tale of fish/rat-monsters on a sinking boat. You play an unnamed protagonist who has been sent on a mission to board a sinking boat, find out its destination and discover the contents of its cargo. You’ll need to search the ship, find keys for doors and deal with the monsters you encounter – you are armed with a gun, but in most cases when you come up against a monster it’s best just to run!
Due to its deliberately retro game design, it’s hard to call Water Hazard a ‘good’ game, but it does manage to perfectly recreate the feeling the classic PS1-era survival horror – thanks largely to its authentically awkward control scheme, low rez textures and wonderfully dodgy voice acting. It’s a fun slice of retro survival horror that celebrates the flaws of PS1-era 3D game engines and game design rather than covering them up. A monster filled boat trip well worth embarking on!
