What-ever Happened to Ruth MacArthur? is an atmospheric narrative driven horror game which sees you unearthing audio-logs of a missing woman who became obsessed with a mysterious book a stranger gave her.
Taking place in the 1970’s, in What-ever Happened to Ruth MacArthur? you search the beautifully decorated home of Ruth MacArthur, a show-writer with a penchant for the occult and horses. Ruth has mysteriously gone missing, but as you search her home you find audio-logs that she left which describes her descent into madness and obsession after she was given a mysterious grimoire by a fan of her show. The grimoire talks of another place and contains a series of instructions and invocations to take her there. Perhaps that’s where she went…
Taking around 20 minutes to play through, What-ever Happened to Ruth MacArthur? Really impresses with its storytelling, voice work and dead-inducing atmosphere. The amount of work that’s gone into creating Ruth’s home is particularly impressive – with lots of great little details, creepy artwork and some beautiful decor (especially the wallpaper!).
It’s a great little horror game with some very evocative writing such as “all the instruments of the modern age are chords in his metal throat” or the air tasting sour, like “blood and honey”. You do enter that world occasionally and it’s quite an unpleasant place to be, but it’s the descriptions and the emotion in those audio-logs that are the most horrifying thing about the other place. Highly recommended.
