Dicey Dungeons – Browser Game

Dicey Dungeons is a very addictive dice-based roguelike dungeon crawler from Terry Cavanagh (Super Hexagon, VVVVVV, Tiny Heist) that offers a very creative take on the genre, with your weapons, equipment and player classes having a dramatic effect on how you play the game.

In Dicey Dungeons your goal is to make your way through five levels of procedurally generated dungeons and defeat a powerful final boss. However all of the combat is carried out by rolling dice, and once rolled you can then select which dice you’d like to use to power your weapons, armor and equipment. As you progress you’ll earn lots of useful loot and level up your character – which increases your max HP and the amount of dice you can use in combat.

The character class you choose to play as can have a dramatic effect on how you do battle – it’s not just a case of different stats. For instance Knights can reroll and tweak their dice, Thieves can use their opponents weapons and Inventors can craft useful gadgets out of old equipment. The weapons and equipment you collect as you make your way through the dungeons dramatically alter how you do battle too – for instance, you can collect items that clone dice, hammers that do stun damage if you roll a six and electromagnets that do more damage with each use.

Terry Cavanagh still plans to add more content and polish to Dicey Dungeons (including another player class), but it’s already great fun. The pixel art visuals are simple, but full of character and the accompanying soundtrack, comprising of midi versions of cheesy dance tunes like It’s Raining Men and What is Love, really spurs you on through your adventure. It’s the clever dice-based combat system that really impresses though – it allows for plenty of variety and turns every battle into a surprisingly strategic experience as you decide how best to utilize your dice. Highly recommended.
